Oxygen Therapy Offers New Hope for Medically Challenged Patients
Connor Barrett was not given much hope when he was born. Autistic, blind and deaf with orthopedic, neurological, digestive, and respiratory disorders his parents were advised that he would live out his life in an institution for the severely disabled. His doctors did not know how wrong they were.
Instead of searching for an institution his parents sought help through Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a medical treatment in which the patient breathes 100% pure oxygen under a pressure greater than normal. The results for Connor were nothing short of miraculous.
“Connor started receiving Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy at Rapid Recovery Hyperbarics in San Bernardino when he was almost three years old.” States his mother Peggy Barrett. “Prior to Hyperbarics, he was unable to do anything other than squirm around on his back. He could not see or hear and had minimal interaction with anyone. After three treatments he began to follow objects with his eyes and actually held his own bottle. He continued to progress and after forty treatments starting walking with a walker and feeding himself with a spoon. He is now four years old and attends pre-school where he colors, uses scissors, does puzzles, rides a tricycle and interacts with his classmates. His vision has improved to the point that he now wears glasses and can see almost 100%. He loves to play the piano and is a joyful addition to our family.”
“I am truly pleased with Connor’s overall progress”, says his pediatrician, “He can now see, hear and walk. His growth has improved tremendously placing him in the fifty percentile on the growth charts for the first time since his birth.”
Dr. Donald Underwood, D.O., M.D.J.D., M.P.H., is the Medical Director at Rapid Recovery Hyperbarics. “The results I have witnessed for some of these patients are truly amazing. Some of them now have the ability to see, hear and walk. For most there is a definite improvement in their quality of life.”
Susan and Patrick Rodriguez,C.H.T., E.M.T., D.M.T., are the owners of Rapid Recovery Hyperbarics. “We are so happy to have helped so many families over the past ten years.” Susan adds, “Being the mother of three children who have benefited greatly from Hyperbarics, I know first hand how Hyperbarics can change a persons life. My children are the reason that I got started and continue in Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.”
Peggy Barrett feels the same. She explains, “Due to my son’s miraculous recovery I have now devoted my career to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. I attended classes, completed an internship and passed the National Board Examination for Certified Hyperbaric Oxygen Technologists. Because Susan and Hyperbarics have given so much to my family, I felt it was only right to give this opportunity to other families in need of hope.” She now works at Rapid Recovery Hyperbarics as a Certified Hyperbaric Technologist.
Numerous published articles support the benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for both children and adults for the following conditions:
Closed Head Injury
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD)
Vision and hearing disorders
Neurological and brain Disorders

Re: Barrett Connor
To Whom It May Concern:
This is a follow-up Report on Connor Barrett, who I last saw on 2/13/03. Connor is a four year-old young man with a history of CHARGE syndrome as well as optic neuropathy in both eyes and cortical visual loss in both eyes, who returns today with mother stating that he appears to have much improved visual functions. Mother states that Connor has undergone Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.
On examination today, the patient appears to have good fix and follow vision of a 1-inch toy at two feet in both eyes. Pupils were round and reactive. He is orthotropic slit-lamp examination revealed normal looking anterior chamber. Lenses are clear. Iris is round and reactive. Anterior chamber was deep and quiet. Conjunctiva and sclerae was clear. Funducscopic examination revealed normal- looking maculae, periphery, and vessels.
- Optic Nerve atrophy, both eyes greatly improved
- Improved visual behavior, Both eyes
It appears that after examination, Connor is doing much better with greatly improved visual behavior in both eyes. Due to this fact, I am going to prescribe lenses for him.
I would like to see him again in six months to see if there are continued. improvements.
If there are any questions, feel free to contact my office.

Connor’s eyesight restored with HBOT!
We had an appointment with Connor's ophthalmologist this week and I thought you would be interested in the outcome. At Connor's appointment last year this same doctor told me that there was nothing we could do for Connor (i.e., surgery or corrective lenses) because he was and always would be legally blind. Connor was sitting on my lap for the examination and when the doctor approached us Connor reached up with one hand and grabbed him by the tie! With his other hand Connor began tracing the teddy bears on the tie. He then grabbed the light from the doctors hand! This doctor was floored! He asked me what we had been doing to improve his vision so much. I replied Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. The doctor then said he had not witnessed such a drastic improvement in a child before. What happened next floored me! The ophthalmologist reached for his prescription pad and wrote a prescription for GLASSES! He feels that with corrective lenses we can restore Connor's vision almost 100%. Thank you so much for all your help! We know that Connor and our family would not be where we are today without you.
Talk to you soon.
Peggy Barrett, C.H.T.

Article Winter 2002/2003
See Connor’s pictorial as he improves after HBOT!
Connor Barrett is 4 years old. He has multiple medical problems, developmental delays. Connor has so many things wrong with him, says his mother, Peggy that it was a guessing game to try to figure out what he needed.
After 10 Hyperbaric Oxygen treatments, He could see!
It used to be worse, before his family found out about Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, HBOT; Connor could only lie on his back. His eyes fluttered, but he could not see. After 10 treatments he could see people; after 40 Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatments, Connor was walking with a walker!
Services are the key!
As Peggy Barrett explains it, HBOT is like putting gas in the car. Even if the car has gas in the tank, it still needs a key to start the engine. In Connor’s case, Services we the key that started the engine so Connor could run. Connor continues to use HBOT about twice monthly.
Progress has been Phenomenal!
Connor has a tricycle, and he rides it every single day, says his mother Peggy. “He rides the bus to school with his behaviorist, and he can’t wait for the bus to pick him up in the morning. His progress has been phenomenal. His teacher, Margaret Nail bubbles when she talks about him.
Connor was Student of the Month
Miss LaMar, the principal of Brainard Elementary School awarded Connor a certificate as Student of the Month. She presented the award at an assembly.
Connor is not a baby any more!
Since using HBOT and combined with Occupational, Physical, and Assistive Technology Connor has become a little man. He feeds himself and sleeps through the night, He is seeing, hearing and walking! No one thought Connor would progress so well!
Prior to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy:
- Tactile defensiveness. (Doesn’t like to be held or touched)
Visually and hearing impairment. ( Blindness)
Can not walk or self Feed
He held his own bottle after only the third treatment and continues to hold it now. He is learning to self feed and holds his own spoon.
- Treatment number 40 Connor walks
- He can now walk with a walker and has even taken a few steps on his own. His physical therapist is thrilled at his progress.
- He now says "Momma", "Dada" and "No!".
- Update! 2/2001
- Connor now walks with out the walker!
- Eye sight Dramatically improved

3 years old Autism, Hypoplasia, Visually and Hearing delayed
Thank God for the work that you and Patrick do for our kids! For those of
you that do not know our story here goes.
Our son Connor was born October 16, 1998. At birth he had respiratory
distress and was in NICU for a week.
The following are some of his diagnoses:
1. Visually and hearing impairment.
2. Developmental delay.
3. Sleep disorder. (Often sleeping only four out of twenty-four hours.)
5. Hypoplasia (underdevelopment) of the white matter of his brain.
6. Multiple orthopedic malformations.
7. Chronic constipation requiring 1 or 2 enemas per week.
8. Tactile defensiveness. (doesn't like to be held or touched).
We found Susan and began Hyperbaric Oxygen treatments on 4-24-01 against the
suggestions of many of Connor's doctors. He has seen almost 38 doctors and
most of them felt that Hyperbarics was a waste of time and money. This is
due to their inexperience with the field. They could not have been MORE
**After his very first treatment he ate 16 ounces of food. (his usual
amount up to that time was 4 ounces per meal). He also slept 10 hours!
This was the first time he had slept through the night in his life without
drugs. It is now common for him to sleep through the night.
**He now has regular bowel movements and has not required a single enema
the completion of his treatments.
**He held his own bottle after only the third treatment and continues to
it now. He is learning to self feed and holds his own spoon.
**He is much happier and actually enjoys being held. He interacts with
everyone in the family including his 6 year-old sister.
**He now says "Momma", "Dada" and of course every two year-old's favorite,
**He can now walk with a walker and has even taken a few steps on his own.
physical therapist is thrilled at his progress.
**His vision and hearing have both improved dramatically.
**He has grown four inches in height in the last six month.
We realize that we still have much work ahead of us and plan on resuming our
Hyperbaric treatments next month. But the improvements in Connor (and to
our family) have been nothing short of a miracle) Thank you so much Susan
and Patrick for making us a part of your Hyperbaric "Family".
Peggy and Gregg Barrett
